The small island of Besar in the eastern region of Indonesia is a two hour journey by boat to the north of the Island of Flores. In 1992 and again in 2002, the island was devastated by natural disasters. Sokola Island School began in April 2006 with a literacy program provided for almost 100 students in the isolated village of Wailago. In addition to the hardships felt from the natural disasters, their lack of access to education due to their isolation, meant almost the entire community was illiterate. The community centre in Wallago was designed and built together with the local community, using materials found in the surrounding area. Flores program is also entering the transition period where Sokola is handing the programs to the community with the assistance of local NGOs and activists of Maumere city.
